Society of Undergraduate Mathematics Students

Most institutions require three letters of recommendation. These should be from faculty who are well-versed in your work. Your recommenders should be able to speak to your abilities in mathematics. Examples of good recommenders include a research professor, a professor who was a part of your REU experience, or an upper division mathematics professor.

It is good practice to give recommenders at least a full month before your first deadline to write their letters of recommendation. It is a good idea to ask in person if possible. Be sure to give them all relevant information including deadlines and important proceses. Your recommender may ask for a CV or a copy of your unofficial transcript. Make sure to follow up with them in the coming time. DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!
