The GRE:
Almost all graduate programs require the General GRE. Additionally, some may require the GRE Math Subject Test. GRE scores remain valid for 5 years.

The General GRE is offered almost year-round. Sections include Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing. You may retake the test to improve your score and you have the option to decide which scores to send to schools. The fee to take the General GRE is $205.

The GRE Math Subject Test is offered yearly in April, September, and October. The Subject Test questions consist of 50% Calculus, 25% Algebra, and 25% additional topics. Algebra is broken down into 1/3 elementary algebra, 1/3 linear algebra, and 1/3 abstract algebra and number theory. Additional Topics is 1/3 introductory real analysis, 1/3 discrete math, and 1/3 of other topics including topology, complex variables, geometry, probability, and numerical analysis. It is recommended that you take the Subject Test April of your junior year. This is so that you still have two chances to improve your score. The fee is $150.
