Research at FSU

There are several different opportunities to do research at FSU!

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP):

UROP is a program open to first and second year students in all majors interested in research. It is a two semester program from Fall to Spring. All members are required to take the UROP Colloquium in both Fall and Spring. This is a one credit hour class lead by students that have completed UROP that meets once every two weeks. Every student will select a research project to work on and is required to present their work in the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Spring.

Directed Independent Study (DIS):

Any FSU student may apply to do Directed Independent Study in any department. A DIS is independent or group work that takes place outside of a classroom, under the supervision of a grad student or professor. DIS work is usually student initiated. If you are interested in a particular field or subject, take time to read through faculty ‘research interests’. If any of these bios seem to align with your interests, reach out to the professor or grad student! If they say no, you can reach out to someone else (or they may recommend a better fit). If they agree, you will then meet and discuss credit hours (1-3), what exactly you will do, and how often you will meet.

NOTE: You don’t have to register for a DIS to work with professor/graduate student.

Honors in the Major:

Students will complete a research thesis under a faculty member. You will work with a committee to select a topic, develop a prospectus, complete a written document based on your research, and defend your thesis orally before your committee. This usually takes 2-3 semesters, during which you will register for 6-9 credit hours. An honors thesis is also called Honors in the Major so at graduation you will graduate with "honors in the major". To qualify for Honors in the Major you must have at least 3.2 GPA, have completed 60 credit hours, be fully accepted in your major, and be at least 2 credit hours before graduating. You must find a thesis director, who must be a full time tenured or tenure track FSU faculty in your major, you must also assemble a committee that consists of the thesis director, an additional faculty member from the department that houses the students major, one “outside” faculty member from any other department, and an optional faculty member from any department.
